iPhones made the shift to USB-C port nearly after a decade of having a Lightning port, and with the iPhone 15 series, the second-generation AirPods Pro. While Macs and iPads have come with USB-C ports for years, much of Apple’s accessories still have the Lightning connector, but not for long.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg expects that all Apple accessories will make the shift to USB-C. According to him, the next iMac will come with USB-C versions of the Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard. If Gurman is to be believed, the transition could happen as soon as next month as the new iMac is expected to arrive.
Additionally, Gurman expects AirPods to be updated in 2024, featuring a USB-C charging case. The next AirPods Max is also expected to incorporate a USB-C port, but its release schedule is yet to be disclosed.
Lastly, Gurman predicts the return of the MagSafe Battery Pack and MagSafe Duo Charger accessories, this time with USB-C ports.
As many believe, the iPhone 15 Pro does not have any restrictions over what USB-C you use. However, there is little difference between the standard and Pro models. The Pro models support USB 3 standard, but the standard models still come with USB 2 standard, the same as the Lighting port.
Even though there is no increase in charging speeds, the USB 3 on iPhone 15 Pro models does enable data transfer speeds of up to 10GBps. However, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus offer data transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps, the same as it was before.
Apart from ‘USB-Cing’ accessories, Apple has several plans in place. These include the introduction of the Vision Pro headset, a redesigned “Series X” Apple Watch, and the first redesign of the iPad Pro in five years. Additionally, Apple is transitioning to M3 chips on 3-nanometer technology, bringing significant performance improvements to MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, and other Macs. Pro iPhones are also expected to receive slightly larger displays, with screen upgrades driving hardware upgrades. Lastly, Apple plans to enter the generative AI race in 2024 with “Apple GPT” and its own large-language model, Ajax.
