Apple launched the iPhone 15 series in September and the rumours about the next lineup are already making the rounds of the internet. iPhone 16’s display will reportedly come with a new OLED material that will make it more power-efficient. The report also mentions that Samsung is developing the display specifically for Apple.
What are material sets in OLED screens
A material set of an OLED screen is made up with different types of components. This includes capping layers (CPL), that take care of the optical characteristics on the screen and others parts. Each component is produced by a specialist manufacturer and is supplied to Samsung. The display maker then uses them to build the final OLED panel.
The varied composition of materials in a set can control different attributes of the OLED panel. This includes brightness, colour accuracy, lifespan and manufacturing efficiency.
In April, Korean publication Elec reported that Samsung used its “M12” material set for the iPhone 15. The report also noted that the company is also developing a new OLED material set, dubbed “M14,” specifically for Apple’s 2024 iPhone 16s. A new report from the same outlet now suggests that the new set can make the OLED panels more energy efficient.
How Samsung will offer Apple more efficient OLED panels for iPhone 16
As per the new report, Korean Ubi Research analyst, Daejeong Yoon has said that Samsung’s OLED plans are focused on replacing blue fluorescent materials with blue phosphorescence ones. This new material is expected to reduce the overall power consumption of an OLED panel.
Yoon also said that Samsung was originally planning on using more power-efficient OLED panel materials for its foldable phones in 2024. However, these materials are not easy to develop and the company may reserve them for Apple’s M14 material set.
He noted: “Following the iPhone 16 next year, M14 will be applied to the iPhone 17 in 2025 and the application period for the Apple iPhone OLED material set will increase to two years.”
Rumours also suggest that the display sizes of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro may also increase to 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch, respectively.
