Ubisoft was initially planning to launch its first-person shooter game, XDefiant, this summer. The Assassin’s Creed maker has now delayed the release date of the upcoming game. Ubisoft delayed XDefiant as the free-to-play game failed Microsoft’s and Sony’s console certification tests.
In a blog post, the gaming studio’s executive producer Mark Rubin said that an October release also appears “likely” as additional work is required to ensure the game meets the platform holders’ requirements. The game is set to launch on multiple platforms, which include PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
Why the hold up
Rubin confirmed that the hold-up in releasing the game is not due to any gameplay issues but to the discovery of unspecified compliance bugs. He also said that Ubisoft San Francisco was planning to submit an updated version of XDefiant for certification in the coming weeks. The studio also had plans to release the game in September.
In the blog post, Rubin said: “Compliance bugs are ones that relate to the systems and overall experience that the first parties expect from games on their platform. (e.g., Are trophies being properly tracked, is my friend’s list being properly updated with game status, etc.) There is however a likely scenario where we get a conditional Pass meaning we have to do a Day 1 patch with some final fixes to ensure compliance. If we do need to do a Day 1 patch, then that pushes our date out to early/mid-October.”
Ubisoft announced the game for the first time in July 2021 as Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. Initially, the game included factions from Tom Clancy franchises Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and The Division. However, in March 2022, the studio announced its plans to drop the Tom Clancy branding from the game. Ubisoft also introduced additional factions from its wider catalogue of IP, including Far Cry.
