With new technologies and features, the digital payments landscape is evolving at a significant pace. The latest innovation is a new feature called ‘pay by car’. Launched by Amazon and Master Card-backed ToneTag, the service will integrate the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system into the car’s infotainment system. This new service will be another convenient way for users to make smartphone-free digital payments. The latest tech was recently showcased on MG Hector. The carmaker partnered with Bharat Petroleum to make payments directly from the car. It also eliminates the need for a smartphone or other mobile devices.
How this new payment system works
Whenever car owners drive up to a fuel station, their car’s infotainment system will display the fuel dispenser number with this system enabled. At the same time, a soundbox placed inside the car will announce the arrival, This will alert the staff at the fuel station.
To refuel their car, users have to enter the desired amount for their fuel purchase, which will also be announced through the same soundbox. This process will result in a secure and contactless transaction which will enhance both convenience and safety.
Other ways to use this service
Users can also leverage this technology in situations other than fuel purchases. The ‘pay by car’ feature can also be used to recharge the car’s Fastag as well. The car’s infotainment screen will also display the existing balance and will also offer a comprehensive solution for vehicle-related payments.
ToneTag’s other payment-related innovations
Earlier, ToneTag developed an offline voice-based payment system. This system was designed for any phone within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) sandbox. The primary objective of the system was to empower individuals who may struggle with app-based payments or digital literacy. This system ensures that everyone can participate in the digital economy.
